“Great program. Truly enjoyed the message taught and the manner in which it was taught. Gestures, rhythms, melodies all help kids remember concepts. They loved it.” - Kindergarten Teacher, Wooldridge Elementary
“How do we both get what we want?” That’s the central question of this bilingual performance that draws students in with colorful puppets, catchy songs, and lots of interactive moments.
Usually, Barton Springs is full of happy animals—birds, fish, bunnies, and gophers all live in harmony. But when the animals’ habitats and scarce resources are threatened, our protagonist Sam the Salamander discovers disagreements erupting everywhere! To solve the problems, Sam and the students take off on a fantastic journey around the world—from a Costa Rican rain forest to Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro and beyond—to learn the four simple steps to conflict resolution.
Objective: To teach students a four-step conflict resolution process
Grades: K-2
Number of Students: 15-35 per performance
Length: Five, one-hour sessions
Day One
Students will identify a conflict.
Day Two
Students will name feelings commonly experienced during conflict, practicing self-expression and reading the body language and gestures of others. They will also try out different methods of self-regulation, such as “The Shake It Off!” dance.
Day Three
Students will evaluate potential solutions to a conflict, including sharing, taking turns, finding more of limited resources, and asking for adult assistance.
Day Four
Students will synthesize and apply the entire four-step process, solving a conflict from start to finish.
Follow-Up Session
Three to six weeks later, our actor teacher returns to the classroom and uses song, game, and dramatic play to reinforce the message of the show.
"The Heroes/Los Héroes" addresses TEKS in eight subject areas, including science, social studies, and health education.
